How To Argue And Lose Every Time

PigOne of the first books that changed the way I looked at things was Gerry Spence’s How To Argue and Win Every Time. The title makes a bold claim but he hasn’t lost a case in court, so it is his to claim.

I was looking through TheFacebook this weekend (not something I usually do) and wasn’t surprised to see people ranting about their sides of the presidential election.

It always comes down to some sort of “your just stupid” argument at the end but, until that point arrives, it’s hilarious to watch.

It got me thinking about Gerry’s book and how you argue online and lose every time. Here are some tips on how to make your arguments get nowhere fast:

Don’t attempt to look at what the person is saying from the their point of view.

Don’t agree with any part of the other side’s argument before making yours.

Don’t ask questions to clarify what the person meant.

Don’t fact-check anything you post.

Always remember everything is black or white, there is no middle ground, ever.

Always assume what the person is saying is some personal attack on you, your family, and your pets.

Always assert that you’re right, and there is no other option out there.

And, of course, make sure you attack the other person. Call him stupid, ignorant, uneducated, or some other name for dumbass.

You can’t win an online argument.

George Bernard Shaw summed it up, “I learned long ago, never to wrestle with a pig. You get dirty, and besides, the pig likes it.”

Understanding resistance will help. You probably still won't win online arguments but you can win offline and with your marketing. Get Friction Free Sales and Marketing.
